Abstract

The rapidly increasing volume of data traffic in computer communication networks is challenging the capacity limits of existing transport infrastructures based on circuit-oriented technologies like SDH/SONET and ATM and the lower capacity of fiber optic cables. To increase the capacity of existing networks should be replaced of existing fiber optic cables networks by new high capacity fiber optic cables or change SONET/SDH module by new technology. The first solution is very high expensive, then we will go to the second solution. In this paper we present a resilient packet ring (RPR) IEEE 802.17 standard in 2004 as a new high-speed backbone technology for computer communication networks and we present a study for deploying SDH WDM, N.GEN.SONET/SDH, N.GEN.SONET/SDH WDM and RPR in the existing SONET/SDH without replaced of existing fiber optic cables in computer communication networks for Ministry of Electricity and Energy - Arab Republic of Egypt. From this study we have shown how RPR facilitates the scaling of an existing network to support increased traffic and subscriber levels and reduce their capital expenditures and operation expensive.
